The Sunshine Blogger Award

Thanks for tagging me, Lara! :) This looks like tons of fun. The rules are: 1. Answer the eleven questions and 2. Ask eleven questions for the people you tag to answer. The theme is sunshine and happiness, so obviously I have to jump in, because who doesn't love sunshine and happiness?

1. Who's your least favourite character EVER? Describe - in detail - what it is that makes you hate them so much. "They're just the worst" or something similar is not acceptable (What? I thought you guys already knew about my bossiness!)

Holden Caulfield.

He drives me crazy.

The worst part is he's not even someone I can hate. He's not a villain. He's not even particularly despicable. So I can't love to hate him. But I can't love him, either. So I just had to read The Catcher in the Rye in its entirety and grind my teeth the whole time. Holden complained way too much. He was whiny and apathetic about almost everything. Anytime an opportunity was presented to him or he was offered help in some way, he turned it down. If he had truly been in a terrible situation that he couldn't fix, I would've been fine with the complaining. But he had options! I'm fine with a little teenage angst in any book, but he personified the kind of angst I can't stand.

2. Do you have any yellow/orange books? What do you want to tell me about them?

I thought I would own more yellow books seeing as my favorite color is yellow, my room is yellow, and pretty much anything that is primarily yellow jumps out at me. But I only own two orange books.

They're not even my favorite covers, but looking at any of my favorite books makes me warm and fuzzy.

3. What does reading smell like to you?

Hot chocolate and the pages of a mass market paperback book.

4. How often do you have doubts about being a blogger?

I don't think I've ever had doubts about being a blogger. It's just a part of who I am now. Doubts about the content I put on my blog is a different story, though. I choose carefully what parts of my writing I share, especially when I'm sharing something from a first draft. But I think that's normal for any blogger to have doubts about something.

5. Where would a book have to be set for you to pick it up immediately, no questions asked?

Hogwarts. ;)

But anything set in London, Paris, or someplace like a library is usually really interesting. Fantasy worlds are always fun, too.

6. What's your reading speed? Do you like it that way, or would you rather it was faster/slower?

It always depends on the book and what else is happening in my life, but I'm pretty average when it comes to reading speeds. I can get a 300-400 page book done in about a week. When it's a shorter book and I really love it, I'll get it done even faster. Sometimes the length doesn't matter because I want to savor a book rather than blaze through it. I guess it all really depends. In general I wish I were even faster because that would mean I could read more books in a shorter amount of time, but I'm okay where I am.

7. Tell me about a quote you can write down almost word for word without looking it up (almost everyone's got one, I reckon). What does it mean to you? What's made you remember it so clearly?

"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much." It's nothing grand and it's probably not even the best opening line ever, but I love it. I've heard it so many times when listening to the audio that when I remember it, I hear it with Jim Dale's exact inflection. Every Harry Potter quote feels like home to me.

8. At what time of year are you happiest?

April (around my birthday,) summertime (especially during my writer's camps), November (during NaNoWriMo), and December (pretty much all month with Christmas excitement).

9. What childhood toy do you have the fondest memories of?

This one's easy. I have a stuffed cat named Menedy (rhymes with Kennedy) that used to be white but is now gray, used to be able to hold her head up on her own but now flops around, and used to be fluffy but now feels like fuzzy socks that have gotten washed too many times. She's really old. Probably thirteen or fourteen-years-old now. Menedy went with me everywhere I went for years. One time I left her at the library and cried the whole way we drove back because I was scared someone was going to pick up that ratty cat and keep her for themselves. Pick up any Calvin and Hobbes comic and that was me at six-years-old with Menedy, only with a little less mischief and a little more reading.

10. How do you feel about school? What is/was it like for you? Love it or hate it?

I love school! I'm homeschooled, so I've never had the normal classroom experience (except for recently with my college classes, but that's nowhere near the same as middle school or high school), but I've always loved learning. Well, I tolerate math and science, but I love history and English and reading and homework. I like getting good grades and scores on tests. I like writing essays. What else would you expect from a Ravenclaw?

11. If you could change one thing about your blog without having to do it yourself, what would it be?

Maybe the design. I've had the same background on my blog ever since I started it, but I'm too scared to mess with it. Anytime I try to do something tech-y I end up spending hours on it and inevitably I screw it up somehow and have to undo all of my messes. I wouldn't want to risk messing with anything on my blog that could accidentally delete important files or something like that. But it would be cool to change my look sometime.

The Perfect Patience Award

My dad at "Sushi and Pizza" nominated me for an award he created called the Perfect Patience award, which is awesome, because us bloggers/readers/fangirls (or fanboys)/writers have to at least try to be patient all. The. Time.

You have shown exceptional patience in the face of a frustrating situation. You are the embodiment of graceful waiting. The rules are simple:

3. Tag 3 friends whose patience knows no bounds (or from whom you want to hear, patient or not).

 

Questions:

1. Is there something on the horizon that will arrive soon, but not soon enough for you?

The fourth season of "Sherlock." The ninth season of "Doctor Who." The next episode of "Supernatural." (Are you sensing a theme here?) Winter by Marissa Meyer. The last "Mockingjay" movie. The results of a novel contest I entered through Scholastic. The "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie. Basically loving something that comes out in installments is hard.

2. What are three things that absolutely try your patience?

1. Hiatus/waiting (as you can clearly see from my answer above). Having friends in different time zones is hard, because you might have to wait eight hours before that person wakes up and sees your message. 2. Someone's inability to make a decision. 3. Trying to explain something to someone who just isn't listening.

3. Do you have any nervous habits or rituals that may not be obvious to anyone around you, but that help you stretch out your patience?

Usually taking deep breaths is the best way to go about it, unless you're going to be waiting for a very long time. In that case, I try to pass the time by reading and writing. If I'm waiting for new episodes/seasons of a show, I'll rewatch episodes (though even that can make me more frustrated) or write fan-fiction about it. Pinterest is a great place to go to express your issues with patience with other fangirls. Texting/e-mailing/messaging something in all caps to someone who's waiting with you is very therapeutic. Especially if you can count on them to write back in all caps.

4. In professionally-produced articles or writing, which makes you crazier: grammar errors or spelling mistakes?

Ugh, probably spelling mistakes. Certain grammar rules can be tricky for anybody to learn and practice, but it's so easy to open a new tab and double check that you're spelling something correctly. It takes all of three seconds.

5. Sherlock Holmes or Sheldon Cooper? Which roommate would try your patience more?

I would definitely rather live with Sherlock. While they both can be condescending and have annoying habits, Sheldon seems way more particular. Sherlock would be the kind of roommate who wouldn't mind my clutter if I were in the middle of a project, because he'll make a mess, too, if he's on a case. Plus, it's Sherlock freaking Holmes.

2. I am a huge fan of really creative practical jokes, but am often terrible at doing them (while keeping a straight face). But this past April Fool's Day, I created a fake e-mail address under the name Wendy Tyler and sent my mom an e-mail requesting to join her homeschool group with her two kids, Jamie and Alice. She didn't find out that it was me until June!
3. My all-time favorite name for a boy is Jamie.
4. I name my electronics, so if you ever hear me call my desktop Shelly, my laptop Lulu, or my iPod Piper, now you know why.
5. My "middle name," Isabel, is not legally my middle name!

1. What book will you read next?

After City of Heavenly Fire, I will probably read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi.

2. Do your parents, siblings, or any other relatives read your blog? What do they think of it?

Yes, yes, and yes! They all seem to like it, and if they don't, they haven't told me. ;)

3. What is the funniest thing you've seen or heard recently?

My friend Dave's responses to Facebook posts. He's hilarious. For example, my friend Jake recently posted a Facebook status (that turned out to be fake) that said, "I think I'm in love with someone. What should I do?" His advice: "I would definitely start by tattooing their name on your forehead and having your last name changed to theirs. Then try to get to know them as a person."

4. If you could choose, right now, to be either ten years young or ten years older than you currently are, which option would you pick?

Ooh, tricky! Ideally, neither, but I suppose I would choose to be ten years younger, because I could always relive the past ten years. But if I were older, I could never get those ten years back.

5. What is your quest?

To become a full-time author!

Laure's Questions

1. Fiction authors: How do you use your blog?

All sorts of ways. I write book review, I blog about writing, I do memes, I share tidbits about what's going on in my life. I blog about everything you can imagine, and then some.


2. Do you have a master plan for accumulating hundreds of thousands of fans?

Not really. Just by networking naturally, I pick up readers and find a few gems myself. There's no grand plan involved, just doing what I love best.


3. What is the easiest part of writing for you?

The first draft, by far! Creating characters and whole new worlds is my favorite part. The very beginnings of the story is the most exciting for me. There are hundreds of pages just waiting to be written, and I get to decide what goes on them. It's amazing.

4. What is the hardest part?

Editing. :P My books are all little parts of myself, and it pains me to cut and change all my hard work, however necessary.

5. How much are you bothered by typos or misplaced words in other people’s stories?

We're all human, and humans make mistakes sometimes. I don't gasp and point fingers and tut at every extra letter or missing apostrophe. I do get annoyed, though, when I try to read a blog post or article about something I'm genuinely interested in, and instead of relaxing and letting my eyes roll over the words, I have to decipher the meaning of everything the writer says. I'm trying to read a blog post, not crack a code! And by now, everyone should know the difference between its/it's, their/they're/there, and your/you're. Those drive me crazy.


6. What is the best technique you’ve found for hunting down such problems in your own manuscripts?

I try not to do everything at once. When I start editing, I do a quick spell check, then work slowly, chapter by chapter. My critique partners are great at catching misplaced commas and semicolons, and my mom never hesitates to point out mistakes she catches! I always appreciate it when someone tells me I've misspelled a word or forgot a period.

7. Do you fully form your characters before beginning a story?

It depends on the story. Sometimes all I have is a name, and other times I know exactly what happened during her seventh birthday party. But I've never once created a character that I've completely stuck with throughout the entire story. I always end up changing at least one thing about my characters, even minor things.

8. If so, does the story ever end up needing those characters to be majorly different?

Again, it all depends on the story. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

9. How do you generally perk up a bit that has turned out kind of boring?

Through editing. I never try to change boring bits or parts that don't make sense in the first draft. I always focus on pushing past it until I do revisions. Usually I end up cutting boring bits all together, or adding a bit of dialogue. I struggle with description, so sometimes when I try to make an effort, I end up over explaining and boring myself.

10. Describe yourself in three words.

Bookish, empathetic, kind.

1. What do you look for in a blog?

Humor, interesting topics, and a creative take on blogging, whether it be the design, the way the blogger reviews books, or anything else.

2. What is something, that despite what others think, is very UN-funny?

"What Does the Fox Say." Why is this song popular? Same with "Gangnam Style."

3. Clip-on earrings – hot or not?

I'm not a huge fan. I had a pair for a very short period of time before I got my ears pierced, and they hurt my ears and kept falling off.

4. What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word, “Marmalade”?

The song "Lady Marmalade." Now it's stuck in my head.

5. Can Vegetarians eat fish and be OK with it?  Discuss.

If you're a pesco-vegetarian it's okay (because pesco-vegetarians eat fish), but if you're a full-on vegetarian, I don't think eating fish is okay. If you're going to call yourself a vegetarian, you should be all in.

6. What’s your favourite word?

Magic. :) A close second is hyperbole. I also love onomatopoeias. They're so fun to say! (Pop, sizzle, snap!)

7. Doughnuts or Danishes?

Doughnuts for sure! Specifically Boston Creams and Peanut Butter filled. Or chocolate with rainbow sprinkles. Or blueberry. (Boy, I'm hungry.)

8. Would you rather meet your favourite Author, Blogger, or Vlogger?

Favorite author! Though I think meeting J.K. Rowling is pretty hard to do.

9. What’s your favourite blogpost that YOU’VE written?

Ooh, that's a tricky one. I love talking about my books, so the interviews with my characters are fun, but I also love ones like my "Happy Birthday, Harry Potter!" post and "Eleanor Is Beautiful."

10. Beautiful girls in dresses on book covers – like or dislike?

It depends. If it's like this

Cait and Mime's Questions:

1. Favourite character in your work-in-progress?

Probably Anya Perriwinkle from The Sorceress. I finished the first draft, but I'm still editing it, so technically it's a WIP. ;) The best explanation I can think up for her is that she's a cross between Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games series and Alanna of Trebond from The Song of the Lioness series with some additions from me, of course. I also like Indie Snow, who is one of the main character's in the book I'm writing with my best friend, Kirsten, and her sister, Avery. It's called Can You Keep A Secret?

2. Does music influence your writing? What's a song that's inspired you?

Absolutely. As I've mentioned HERE, I love to listen to music when I'm writing my books (or blog posts!) as much as possible. One song that's inspired me is "Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars. I talk about it HERE. Of course, there are more songs that have inspired me, but the list would be really long if I mentioned them all. ;)



3. Do you prefer writing in present tense or past tense? Why?

It's hard to say, but I think I prefer writing in the past tense. Though it could just be because ever time I try to write in the present tense I end up writing in the past tense again. I think the present tense is cool, though, because it makes the reader feel like you're there right as everything is happening.



4. Name a random fact a book taught you.

I found these two facts (I couldn't choose one) from The Perfectly Useless Books of Useless Information by Don Voorhees.

1. The average American home contains $90 in loose change.
2. It is illegal to use the American flag in advertising.


5. Favourite foods to snack on while reading/writing.

Chocolate of any kind (but preferably in the form of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or Peanut Butter M&M's), hot chocolate, and/or popcorn. Though I know it's a popular choice among writers (along with chocolate), I absolutely can't stand the taste of coffee. I'll have to get my caffeine elsewhere.

6. Name 3 books you can't wait until are released.

1. Allegiant by Veronica Roth. (The third book in the Divergent series).
2. The Soul by Stephenie Meyer. (The second book in The Host series).
3. The Seeker by Stephenie Meyer. (The third book in The Host series).

7. Name a sequel that outshone it's predecessor.

I've been reading a lot of post-apocalyptic books recently, and I think they all follow a similar pattern. The first book sets everything up and shows how everyone is in danger because of an evil president/government/evil species. The second book show the main character starting some sort of rebellion along with her friends. The third book wraps up the series by showing the rebellion succeeding and the government getting destroyed. Most of the time the first book is the best in these series (such as The Hunger Games, Matched, and Delirium).

I'm reading the Darkness Rising series by Kelley Armstrong and I've almost finished the second book in the series: The Calling. I'm not sure if I like The Calling better than The Gathering or not, yet, but they're both pretty close in quality (which is awesome). I think Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets outshone Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, though.

8. Best side-kick/secondary-character you've read this year?

This year? I haven't read a lot of awesome secondary characters this year (except for Harry Potter characters), but I'd have to go with Four from the Divergent series and Daniel, Rafe, Annie, Sam, Corey, and Hayley from the Darkness Rising series. They all have such great personalities without outshining the main character.

9. Favourite quote!

These are my two absolute favorite friendship quotes (EVER!!!!). I think they describe my friendship with my best friend, Kirsten.

Nope. I don't set reading goals for myself. I do the summer reading program for our local library each year, and this is the first year I can do the teen program, but other than that I just read whenever I feel like it. Oh, and I'm in two book clubs.



11. If you were a superhero would you wear a cape?

No way! I'd probably trip over it! ;P

1. The job you want to have?

Writer/Author/Anything that has to do with writing/Ruler of the whole world Peacemaker. I already have writing as a job though, being a monthly contributor to The Write Practice. ;) I think I have bragging rights for that one since not many 12-year-olds get to write for one of the Top 10 Writing Blogs.

2. Favorite singer/band?

Taylor Swift is my favorite singer ("Safe and Sound" took care of that) and my favorite band is The Civil Wars ("Safe and Sound" and "Kingdom Come" also helped with that).

3. Favorite choc or sweet?

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. And anything with chocolate and peanut butter. Or chocolate. Or dark chocolate.

4. Three words to describe you?

Witty, Nerdy, and Creative.
