July Wrap-Up

Books I Read

Not a super great month for reading, overall. I started several books, but I barely finished any. I read three more Death Note books, but they're all starting to blend together into one giant story in my mind, so reviewing them would be a near impossible task. I am enjoying how the story is progressing for the most part, though. Maybe I'll finish all the books I started in August . . .

Movies I Watched

"Incredibles 2"

5/5

The sequel was definitely worth the wait! It had a similar feel as the first "Incredibles" movie except this time we got to focus on Elastigirl more. The family dynamics were hilarious, as always, and we got a closer look at Jack-Jack's powers. I did predict one of the major plot twists, but it really didn't take a detective to figure that one out. If you're familiar with superhero or espionage movies at all, you'll probably guess it, too. I didn't think it took away from the story, though. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Speech and Debate"

3/5

This movie had so much potential. It had a quirky cast of characters and a compelling story about censorship in schools and art remaining in its true form. But the plot meandered. I wasn't sure what the movie was about, in general. There was no climax, no satisfying conclusion, and no clear-cut message. There were funny moments (like the entire audition-from-hell sequence) and parts I liked about the characters, but I didn't really know who anyone was or what I should feel about what was going on. The script could have benefited from some copious editing.

Quotes I Wrote

Camp NaNo was a bit of a bust when it came to my word-count goal. I managed 10,000 out of the 20,000-words I'd challenged myself to write. Honestly, though, I should be happy I wrote even that much with tech week and performances for "Once Upon a Mattress" taking up most of my time this month.

"What kind of a bloody codename is 'Vacuum?'" Neville complained as he inspected the name glowing on the screen of his laser gun. He stood by the door, starting the line to go out.
"Maybe it's like janitor-by-day, crime-fighter-by-night sort of situation," I offered as I joined him, continuing to form the line.
"It's still an awful codename," he grumbled. "What's yours?"
"Starship."
Neville groaned. "See? Even if yours is cliché, at least it's a cool kind of cliché."
-All the World's Afraid

“She’s not even that good,” Zach protested. “She's never done theatre before now. Why did Kyle cast her, anyways?”
“Because Kyle has a thing for girls who can cry on command,” I said, glaring at Ashley’s turned back as she giggled and flirted with Joshua shamelessly. He caught my eye and gave a “help me” expression, but I got distracted by Eleanor’s, “Um, what?” and Abby’s look of horror.
“Oh, gross, no!” I said, realizing my mistake. “Not in a pervy way. I just meant if I were to sniffle a little in an audition, he’d get sucked into the melodrama and give me a big role.”
-All the World's Afraid

Obsessions I Acquired

"The Walking Dead" - I'm only two seasons in, but it's super intriguing already. It took me a little bit to get into it, because even though it's a high-stakes kind of show with a survivalist/dystopian feel, not a whole lot happens each episode. It's simple and slow moving, but now that I've gotten to know the characters and their relationships with each other, it's a lot more interesting.

Pictures of the Month

I got my senior photos this month and they are magical! I love how the photographer (from Inspired & Enchanted Photography) was able to completely incorporate the Harry Potter theme I was going for.

Took some sibling and family photos as well.

I'm so excited for this upcoming year and all of the opportunities I have lined up already!
My mom and I accidentally wore the same dress on the same day, but we each totally wore it differently.
"Once Upon a Mattress" was such a fun show to be a part of! I loved every single person in the cast and crew. Here's one of me with all the knights.
A fellow lady-in-waiting.
Winnifred "Fred" the Woebegone.
Prince Dauntless (the Drab)
My family after preview night.
My director.
The whole cast!
One of my castmates did my hair for me every night and threaded gold beading through it. It looked so pretty!
My awesome stage manager from "A Christmas Carol" is also the chairwoman at the Hershey Area Playhouse.
King Sextimus.
Another lady-in-waiting (she's the one who did my hair for me).
Lady Larken.
The Minstrel, the Jester, and I!
A castmate from "A Christmas Carol" came to see the show.
Another "Christmas Carol" castmate.

Our Pumbaa from "Lion King Jr." came out to see the show, as well!
A bunch of the kids from the Theatre Academy class we were all in together came to see it.
Even more "Christmas Carol" castmates!
Thoughtful gifts from castmates, my director, and the stage managers.
Here are some awesome action shots from one of our dress rehearsals. (Photo credit to Michael Feldser.)
"Opening for a Princess"
"Shy"
Listening to Winnifred talk about the "Swamps of Home."
"BLOOOOOOD!"
Winnifred hitting another very high-pitched note.
"Listen to the voice of the swamp . . . gluggle-uggle-uggle."
"Spanish Panic"
This song was my favorite to dance to every night.
"Song of Love"
"I'm in love with a girl named Fred. She's musical to boot. She will set your feet a-tapping when she plays upon her lute!"
"He's in love with a girl named F-R-E-D Fred!"
Worried for Lady Larken after the queen catches her sneaking out of the castle.
"Now we can all get married!"
"It wasn't the pea at all!"

Scout enjoyed her doggie dish of vanilla ice cream.
Someone got a haircut!

Your Senior pictures really turned out fantastic! Looks like the perfect mix of great photographer, great subject, and great vision of how to make it happen. Everything about them works.

The play sounds fun and how nice of all the friends/former cast-mates to come out and support you.

I'm glad Scout gets her own dish of ice cream, because seriously, I wouldn't put it past my youngest to share an ice cream, one lick at a time, with our dog.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy every second of your gap year!

So, why didn't you get much reading done? This is so unlike you?

Fun post. I love the pictures most of all. What an incredibly fun month!

I love love love seeing your theater family all support one another like that. Love! And I absolutely loved seeing "Once Upon a Mattress" - it was excellent and you did a wonderful job. You are so expressive!

Great quotes, too. It'll be nice for you to do some writing with your gap year, too.

LOVE the pictures!

Oh, it looks like you had an amazing time doing Once Upon A Mattress! It looks like a really funny show, and your hair is amazing. I miss being in my school shows so much - I've heard the college I'm going to next year do great productions, though, so here's hoping.

I love your senior photos, too. I wish they were a thing in the UK: I think I'd go with a Harry Potter theme too, if I could.

I also loved The Incredibles. The scenes with Violet and her new boyfriend were my favourite thing, and Mr Incredible trying to deal with Jack Jack? Hilarious. Your Wrap-Ups are always great, Kate.

@Jimmy

Thank you! They're always eager to work with people who like to take creative pictures, so it's a nice partnership.

It's been so much fun performing at different theaters because I make so many new friends who want to support me in other shows and vice versa. You end up seeing a lot of different plays and musicals that way.

I love Scout, but there are some things I wouldn't share with her, and one of those things is saliva. She can get her own dish. xD

@Dr. Mark

Ha ha, very funny. :P I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I went to bed at 2 in the morning most nights.

Thanks! There were a lot of good pictures this month.

@Boquinha

I really do have a great theatre family. It was a lot of fun performing, so I'm glad that showed onstage. :) Thank you!

Absolutely. I'm looking forward to having lots of writing time.

@Lara Liz

I so did! It was a hilarious (and goofy) show. I wasn't exactly sure what to think of it at first, even after I got cast, but once it came together it was clear how funny it was. Ooh, what college are you going to? I'd love to hear all about any shows you do there!

Thank you! You could totally make them a thing. If you want them, I say go for it. ;)

Oh my gosh, the scene at the restaurant where Mr. Incredible is trying to impress the boy for Violet's sake was hysterical and so awkward.

Thank you!

I saw your Graduation Pictures on Twitter and they look so amazing! I wish i could have graduation pictures as pretty as yours turned out to be!
And I thought the sequel to Incredibles was amazing! I enjoyed it immensely and loved the entire storyline.
Your theatre pictures look like you've had a whole lot of fun. Saw that picture you took with your 'Christmas Carol' Castmate and reminds of the time I was in a similar University Production. Of course, I was a spirit accompanying the Ghost of Christmas Past (I was always in very small roles heh heh but enjoyed it a lot).
And best of luck with your Gap Year! I took one only after University and wished I'd taken it after High School like you're planning to do. Best of luck xx

Your senior pictures are lovely!! That is awesome, especially when you look back on them in a couple decades 😂 Really, all your pictures are so fun, thanks for sharing them! Sorry about the rough reading month, that is always hard! Hopefully this one will be much better for you! And oooh SO curious to hear what you think of The Walking Dead as you continue- I loved it at the point you are at, that is the best part I think, if I had to pick a favorite!

Aww your senior photos though! SO MAGICAL. I especially love the one of you with the book and all the magicalness flying from it. 😍Also congrats on your performance!! And like getting any writing done plus doing all of that seems super amazing so YOU GO!

I kind of want to watch the Walking Dead but also am scared of slow episodes.😂I have no attention span these days ah hahah.

Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic August!!

@Maria John Writes

Aww, thanks so much, Maria! :)

It really was! Sometimes sequels are disappointing, but Pixar is good at them.

"Small" roles can be the most interesting ones anyways. It must have been so fun to accompany the Ghost of Christmas Past! I love villainous/creepy roles.

Thank you! That's what I hear a lot of people saying. I'm not that far into it yet, but I'm already enjoying it. :)

@Shannon

Thank you! LOL, I'm sure I'll still love them in a couple decades.

August is proving to be a (somewhat) better reading month, but I'm anticipating an even better one in September when I will not be, for once, involved in a theatrical production. I miss the stage already, but I'm looking forward to reconnecting with the bookish world@

Haha, I don't know if I should be concerned I've already reached the peak of the series or not. It is really exciting right now!

@Cait

Thanks, Cait!! Aren't they? I absolutely adore that picture. I'm using it for everything I possibly can right now. xD

I'm surprised I got any writing done, too, to be honest! I'm glad I didn't completely abandon my projects. It makes them easier to dive back into when I do have the time.

It may not be the show for you, then. xD It's suspenseful all the time, but not necessarily "exciting." Maybe watch it when your attention span is a little better!

Thank you! I hope you enjoyed your travel!

@Ivy

Thanks, Ivy!! I'm sure I will. :)
