For my dad's fortieth birthday, my mom
arranged for forty of his friends to send one of their favorite CDs to
him so he could discover new artists. For my "CD" I created a YouTube playlist
filled with songs that have influenced my writing in one way or
another. I had a lot of fun seeing what people sent him, and I realized
that I've been in a sort of music rut recently. I've been listening to
the same stuff over and over again, and I'd like to find something new.
So
I was wondering if any of you would like to comment and say what your
favorite artists are. It can be a band, a singer, an instrumental group,
anything you'd like. If you'd like to include a favorite song, too,
that would be great. :)
I've also been really addicted
to alternative stuff (Lorde, Melanie Martinez, music from the "Hunger
Games" movies, music from "The Fault In Our Stars,"
music from "Parenthood" and "Gilmore Girls," etc.), so if you know of
anything that's similar to those artists, I'd love to hear your
suggestions.
(Psst. If you want to see a list of my
favorite music, check out the "My Favorite . . ." tab at the top of the
home page. Scroll down a little bit and it's right there.)
Ingrid Michaelson, Imagine Dragons, One Republic, The Lumineers, Jack Johnson, Michael Buble . . . I'm kind of in a rut too.
ReplyDeleteVitamin String Quartet for some really amazing instrumental covers.
I wrote a long comment, and then Blogspot ate it. xD Will try again later.
ReplyDeleteBut I second the Jack Johnson recommendation.
You might like Jack White (White Stripes), Chagall Guevara, The Choir, Barenaked Ladies, Default, Tracy Chapman, Coldplay, Damon Johnson (reminds me of a female Taylor Swift at times), Expanding Man, Dishwalla, Gin Blossoms, Goo Goo Dolls, Norah Jones, The Corrs, Incubus, Keane, Matchbox 20, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Silverchair (post 2008), Widespread Panic, and Thornley.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite artists: King's X, The Beatles, Queen, Jude Cole, Sting/The Police, Public Enemy, Soilwork, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Yes, Rush, Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, Galactic Cowboys, Winery Dogs, Winger, Jellyfish, Van Halen, P.O.D., Iron Maiden, Flying Colors, Extreme, Days of the New, Cyprus Hill, Big Wreck, Alice in Chains, Alter Bridge...
Thanks for the suggestions, guys! :) I'll look into all of them very soon.
ReplyDeleteI WAS going to post my favorite artists, but dad stole them all. >:( :P
ReplyDeleteIf I listed all of my favorite music artists, my comment would be longer than your blog post. :-P So I'll make just one suggestion: Eivør Pálsdóttir. She sings all different styles - slow, jazzy, metal, folk, operatic; and sings in multiple languages (Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian, English). You're bound to find at least a few songs that you like. ;-)
ReplyDelete@Rich Ha ha, all right. ;)
ReplyDelete@storytellergirlgrace Ooh, thanks so much! :) That's definitely a unique recommendation. I'll check her out!
I was going to say Zedd, Calvin Harris, Avicii, and David Guetta but I think you know that. :P So here is one to check out, PTX.
ReplyDelete@Siths and Jedis Ha ha, I predicted that. ;) Thanks for the suggestion!
ReplyDeleteSo, I've been meaning to post on here FOREVER, but obviously I'm extremely late to the party. I've got a few suggestions for you, straight from our own music collection.
ReplyDeleteAnything John Mayer, but especially his "Continuum" album. I'd say it's one of the best mainstream albums to come out of the early 2000s. Give it a first-to-last listen.
Trombone Shorty. He bridges the gap between jazz and funk beautifully, which would definitely expand your listening list.
Breathe, "All That Jazz." If you're looking for something in that alternative vein, this album would be good. Plus, it has that nice late 80s, early 90s feel, which I think you'll enjoy.
I could give you a million more suggestions, but I'll save those for trips in the car to and from various activities. :P
@Dr. Mark I've loved what I've heard from "Continuum," so I'll definitely listen to more of that. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'm glad for the jazz recommendations. Jazz is something I feel like I haven't given a good enough chance to, but I don't really know where to start. I'll look into those. Thanks!
